We have lost a director. Kirk Von Der Heydt has volunteered for the position. According to the bylaws, Kirk must be approved by the membership. We will be voting on Kirk at the next business meeting which just so happens to be next week, April 6th.

Do you know how to use Google? Would you like to help the Workshop? Good. We knew you would. The Workshop now has a grant committee looking for three or four volunteers to help research grants we can apply for. This is a research position, not a grant writing position.

We have four rooms in our new building that need names. We are leaving it up to the members to generate possibilities. Harken, creative writers! Give us some ideas.

Send Kate Cornell or Donna Lasko your brilliance.

I’m still taking blog ideas. I’ve got some good’ins which will be discussed (fleetingly) during next week’s announcements.

With over 300 attendees, 10 literary agents, 48 classes, one contest and multiple door prizes, the 2010 DFW Writers’ Conference was successful beyond anyone’s wildest imagination. Overall, the comments from the both the attendees and agents were that the conference was well run by a group of professional, but very friendly, people.

During the April 14 meeting of the DFW Writers’ Workshop, the group thanked chairperson Jeri Burbage for her two years of dedication to the conference. As well, the multitude of classroom monitors, agent wranglers, and other volunteers were recognized.

Speaking of successes, the following Workshop members had full or partial requests from:

Agent Joshua Bilmes — Pat Hauldren, Harry Robbins, John Keith, Russell Connor, Nik Holman, George Goldwaithe

Agent Gina Panettieri — Carolyn Williams, Robert O’Haugherty, Mary Kelly, Merris Doud, Ginnie Bivona, Anne Perry

Agent Diana Fox — John Sanders, Donna Lasko, Katy Roberts

Agent Lucienne Diver — Pat Hauldren, Paula LaRocque, Kendall Furlong

Agent Paul Levine — Jeannie Furlong, Tina Britt

Agent Mary Kole — Stephen Manning, Anne Perry

Agent Laurie McLean — Carolyn Williamson, Pat Hauldren, Larry Enmon, Kyle White

Agent Anne Hawkins — Kenneth Ingle, Daryle McGinnis, Wes Dunham, Tom Gensler

In other Workshop news, Kenneth Ingle signed the contract for his fourth book. A. Lee Martinez has two upcoming book signings. On Friday, April 16 at 6 p.m. at the Weekend Reader Book Shop in Balch Springs. On Saturday, April 17 from 2 — 4 p.m. at the Barnes & Nobles Booksellers in Hurst.

Finally, registration for the 2011 DFW Writers’ Conference is underway. We’re moving to a bigger facility to accommodate more people. It will be held February 26–27, 2011 at the American Airlines Training and Conference Center in Fort Worth. Located on a lush wooded campus, the event will be more of a writers’ retreat. New York Times #1 best-seller and Thriller Master, Sandra Brown, will be the keynote speaker. Early registration is recommended, since this year’s event sold out.

It seemed as if the news and announcements would never end at the January 20 meeting of the DFW Writers’ Workshop, but that’s not a bad thing.

A. Lee Martinez’ book, Monster, is now available as a mass-market paperback. Kyle White sold his first novel, Attack of the Crystal Spiders, a Middle Grade science fiction work, to Wild Child Publishing. The American Library Association named Rosemary Clement-Moore’s novel Highway to Hell as a 2010 Best Books for Young Adults. One of Kenneth E. Ingles’ short stories is a finalist in the current Writer’s Digest contest. Candace Havens inked a three-book deal with Harlequin. She will also sign copies of her newest work, Take Me If You Dare, on Saturday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Barnes & Nobel in Hurst.

Finally, three new members were welcomed to DFWWW, and the Workshop’s extensive reference library reopened after a year-end inventory. Books may be checked out for three weeks.

During the October business meeting, members of the DFW Writers’ Workshop were reminded that nominations for the 2010 Board of Directors will be opened in November. The current occupants of each office described his or her duties.

Other volunteers needed to keep things moving smoothly are: An elections coordinator (see Russell Connor), people to help with the registration desk during the 2010 DFW Writers’ Conference (see Alley Hauldren), agent attendants (see Larry Enmon), and classroom monitors (see Carolyn Williamson).

In other news, Alley Hauldren’s short story “Catsup” was selected to appear in the editor’s choice edition of an upcoming issue of Bewildering Stories. Rosemary Clement-Moore has a book signing for her Young Adult novel, The Splendor Falls, on Saturday, October 10 from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble store in The Parks Mall. Candace Havens was featured on the front cover of last week’s edition of DFW.Com Ink magazine.
